The thyroid gland, which resembles a butterfly or a bow tie, is located at the base of the neck. This gland is crucial for the overall health because it’s in charge of the thyroxin production. Thyroxin is a hormone which encourages the regulation of the heart rate, growth and development in children, and metabolism.

The former occurs when there is excessive production of the thyroid hormone and the most common symptoms are increased heart rate and palpitations, tiredness, changes in bowel movements, excessive sweating, menstrual problems, hot flashes, anxiety and irritability, forgetfulness, sleeping problems, problems with concentration, unexplained weight loss, etc.

The latter condition develops when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone. The most common symptoms of this condition are: weight gain, reduced menstrual flow, swelling in the neck area, depression, dry skin and hair, brittle nails, tiredness, depression, forgetfulness, etc.
