Everyone will definitely agree: toothaches are the worst feeling ever! They destroy your entire day and deprive you of sleep. What’s more, since the pain is intolerable, you become nervous and bad-tempered. But, why do we experience toothache?

The reasons are numerous. Some of them are abscessed teeth, tooth decay, damaged fillings, tooth fracture, gum infections, teeth grinding, and excessive chewing of gum. The pain varies from mild to severe and it manifests as tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, throbbing pain, and dull and continual ache.

Whenever you experience a toothache, the best option is to consult your dentist. However, it is good to know the following natural remedies until you go to your appointment:

  • Clove oil or cloves-drop several drops of clove oil onto your aching tooth, but don’t swallow the liquid. Other option is to soften a clove in your mouth by holding it in your mouth for few seconds. Next, take the clove and gently press the painful area to get some of the juice going.
  • Warm salt and water rinse-dissolve a tsp of salt in one glass of warm water and then mix the content. Swish your mouth with it, especially in the painful area.
  • Holding the head up-this will alleviate pressure in your painful tooth and stop the throbbing pain.
  • Garlic-crush a clove of garlic and then apply it onto your tooth. Due to its analgesic and antiseptic properties, garlic will successfully lower the pain.
  • Cold compresses-put couple of ice cubes in gauze and apply it onto your cheek where the tooth is located. This will lower the amount of pain.
  • Hydrogen rinse-rinse your mouth with 3% hydrogen solution to relieve ache and remove any remaining food between the teeth and gums.
  • Used tea bag-apply it onto the tooth while it’s still warm.
  • A pain killer-drink aspirin or any other pain killer to stop the pain.

Important to know:

Never apply aspirin onto a painful tooth because aspirin can only damage the gums and cause a burning sensation which can lasts for days.
