Unfortunately, in the USA solely, 7.9 million people over the age of 20 suffer from blood sugar levels higher than the normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. In fact, this condition is known as pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.

Although pre-diabetic individuals rarely experience symptoms, complications associated with diabetes, like heart diseases, can begin to develop even when a person is only pre-diabetic.

Type 1 diabetes

This type of diabetes occurs because the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas-beta cells are being destroyed by the immune system. Namely, people with type 1 diabetes produce no insulin and need insulin injections to control their blood sugar levels. In most cases, this type of diabetes develops before the age of 20; however, it can occur at any age as well.

Type 2 diabetes

When a person suffers from this type of diabetes, the body still produces insulin, although its production may lower with time. Usually, the pancreas produces little or no insulin, or the body is unable to recognize insulin and use it up properly.

In this case, glucose cannot enter the body’s cells and be used as energy. As a consequence of this inability, glucose begins to build up in the blood.
